floorplanviz — An alternative way of illustrating an org chart

Illustration of a company's structure and workflows
floorplanviz illustrates a company as a city

What are better, more meaningful ways to visualize an organization beyond the classical org chart? What metaphors could help to tell stories about the hidden workflows, structure, hierarchy, and culture in an agile company?

Learning how a company works can be a difficult and lengthy endeavor for new colleagues. Similar to navigating through a new city. What if we could illustrate what is going on in an organization by telling stories about the neighborhoods and their inhabitants?

The project »floorplanviz« visualizes the structure of the agile tech company moovel during the period of Febr. 2016 - Sept. 2017. As an alternative to the classic org chart, different teams and activities are visualized with the help of metaphors (i.e. different buildings & activities within a city). The viz is aimed to be used as an introduction, orientation system, and infographic for new employees, associates, and clients.

Project Background

The project »floorplanviz« was born out of the urge to create more clarity of who is doing what in a fast-growing agile company in which different departments such as product development, marketing, finance, etc. had very different working modes and communication styles.
